IPL 2022 Orange Cap
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

The Orange Cap is presented to the leading run-scorer of the IPL – here’s a look at how the top batters are faring in IPL 2022, as well as the top run-getters of the previous editions of the tournament.

IPL 2022 Orange Cap: Who’s leading the runs list?

Jos Buttler has been the clear frontrunner for the Orange Cap and is nearing his best tally ever in the IPL (548 runs in 2018). The Rajasthan Royals opener has already hit three centuries in the tournament. Behind him is Lucknow Super Giants’ KL Rahul, arguably the most consistent batter in IPL’s recent years, as well as Shikhar Dhawan, the veteran opener playing for Punjab Kings this year.

The full list of top run-getters can be found on the IPL site here.

IPL: History of Orange Cap and other awards

The Orange Cap has been presented to the top run-getter in the Indian Premier League each year, and changes hands whenever the top entry on the list changes. Along with the Orange Cap, players are also presented with the Purple Cap (leading wicket-taker), Maximum Sixes award (for most sixes), Most Valuable Player (equivalent to Player of the Tournament) and Emerging Player (young player of the year).

At the end of each match, there’s another set of awards handed out through sponsors: Man of the Match, Swiggy Instamart Fastest Delivery (quickest ball of the game), Upstox Most Valuable Asset of the Match, Punch Super Striker of the Match, CRED Power Player of the Match, RuPay On-The-Go 4s and Dream11 Game Changer of the Match.

So far, Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring the most runs in a single edition of the tournament – 973 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2016 edition.

IPL: List of previous Orange Cap winners

The player who is leading the IPL run charts wears a symbolic orange-coloured cap while on the field. In case there is a tie for runs, the batsman with a superior strike-rate is handed the cap.

This year, due to sponsorship, it has been named the Aramco Orange Cap.
