Watch: Joe Root effects bizarre run out from silly point off full-blooded drive

Joe Root effects a run out while playing for Yorkshire in the County Championship 2024 Division 2 fixture against Glamorgan
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: A full-blooded drive rebounded off Joe Root at silly point to the wicketkeeper, resulting in an unusual run out on Day 3 (May 5) of the County Championship fixture between Yorkshire and Glamorgan.

Kiran Carlson, batting then 15 off 35 balls, charged down the wicket against Dom Bess and hit a full-fledged drive. The ball ricocheted off the left leg of Joe Root, who was standing at silly point, and rolled towards Yorkshire wicketkeeper Jonathan Tattersall, who was quick to shatter the stumps.

Carlson put in a dive but eventually fell short of his crease, lying on the ground in disbelief. Root’s Yorkshire teammates congratulated him for effecting the run out.

Earlier, Root scored a 165-ball 156 to help Yorkshire put on a massive 519-7 in their first innings in reply to Glamorgan’s 221. This was Root’s second consecutive County Championship hundred, after the 190-ball 119 against Derbyshire. Opener Finlay Bean top scored with an 189-ball 173.

Yorkshire will look to push for the first win of the season after three draws and defeat, with Glamorgan 171-3 in their second innings and trailing by 127 ahead of the final day.
