Watch: Angry Virat Kohli fumes off after being dismissed leg-before

Virat Kohli LBW off Matt Kuhnemann in Indore Test match
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: During the third innings of the third Test match against Australia, Virat Kohli got out leg-before off Matt Kuhnemann and was visibly annoyed with himself as he walked off.

After bowling out India for 109, Australia were a comfortable 186-4 before they collapsed to 197. The lead of 88 was not big, but Nathan Lyon took out Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma to reduce India to 32-2 to seize the advantage for Australia.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli pushed the score to 54, and looked confident as Kuhnemann came in to bowl to Kohli. The fourth ball of the 23rd over was a tad shorter than good length, and Kohli set himself up for the pull towards mid-wicket.

It was not the best choice of strokes, for the bounce on the pitch has been far from even and predictable even from the first hour of the Test match. The horizontal-bat shot is always riskier than its vertical-bat counterparts on pitches with awkward bounce – whether too high or too low – for the ball was not pitched short enough.

The ball remained low and hit Kohli on the back pad in front of the stumps. The Australians appealed, the umpire ruled in their favour. It was a decision so obvious that Kohli decided against a review, fuming en route his way back to the pavilion.

Lyon (3-27) took out Ravindra Jadeja as well. At tea, India are 79-4, with Pujara on 36 and Shreyas Iyer yet to score. They need another nine runs to make Australia bat again.
