BAN vs NZ, 1st ODI: Team news

Bangladesh have rested some key players in the first two games to keep them fresh for the upcoming World Cup. Litton Das will lead the side in Shakib Al Hasan’s absence, while Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah will all return, along with three uncapped players – Zakir Hasan, quick Khaled Ahmed and tweaker Rishad Hossain.

Apart from Shakib, Bangladesh have also rested Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and the pace battery – Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, and Hasan Mahmud.

New Zealand have named a second-string squad too, keeping the workload management in mind. Lockie Ferguson will lead them as Kane Williamson, in a race against time to recover from his limb injury for World Cup, continues to sit out.

Other notable absentees are Tom Latham, Devon Conway, and Glenn Phillips – all wicketkeepers – all-rounders Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner, and pacer Matt Henry. Tim Southee, who fractured a finger in the recent ODIs in England, will undergo a surgery, while Jimmy Neesham and Mark Chapman have opted to be with their partners at the birth of their children.

Dean Foxcroft is their sole uncapped player.

Match prediction – Today’s Bangladesh-New Zealand live match

Despite their disappointing Super Fours exit in Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh have the home advantage of playing in their happy-hunting ground in Mirpur. They would like to keep their 13-year unbeaten streak at home against New Zealand intact: they won 4-0 in 2010 and 3-0 in 2013.

It will be a closely fought series as both sides have experimented with the squads. The return of left-arm pacer Trent Boult, who forewent his central contract, is a huge positive for the visitors.

Here’s where you can follow the Ban-NZ series live.
