Ashes 2023, Headingley Test: News and updates

England have replaced the injured Ollie Pope and an uncharacteristically lacklustre James Anderson with two all-rounders, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes. Mark Wood, finally fit, has replaced Josh Tongue, who did a reasonable job at Lord’s.

If England’s approach in the first two Test matches were high-risk, Headingley may witness more of that. The onus is on England to win this Test match, a difficult ask given the rain threat. If they do not win, Australia will retain the Ashes until 2025/26… completing a decade-long hold on the coveted urn.

There is uncertainty over Hazlewood, for whom Edgbaston and Lord’s marked the first instance of consecutive Test matches since 2020/21. However, Australia may want to decide the series in Headingley (or – given the looming rain – at least retain the Ashes), and may take that risk.

Ashes 2023, Headingley Test: Match prediction

Australia are 2-0 up in the series, but both Test matches were close wins. England were in the hunt for both Test matches, and should back themselves to reduce the margin here.

However, the weather prediction does not look good, and rain may have the final say.
