Quick wickets early in the day put India on the back foot in the morning session. Pant, however, launched a terrific counterattack to help the hosts accelerate their scoring.
In Pant and Kuldeep Yadav, India had two left-handers at the crease, which is why Root decided to bring himself into the attack. However, Pant seemed least bothered about the bowling change, using his feet expertly to hoik the England captain over mid-wicket.
Kohli, who was sitting in the dressing room, seemed flabbergasted with the ease with each Pant hit the shot.
