Watch: Deepak Chahar wins staring contest after Guptill’s 98-metre no-look six

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Deepak Chahar shared an engaging battle with Martin Guptill in the first T20I between India and New Zealand.

The incident took place in the 18th over of the New Zealand innings. Martin Guptill had helped the Black Caps to blast off after a solid start, and they stood at 144-3 with 18 balls to face. Guptill was unbeaten for a 40-ball 64, and looked all set to take his side to a stronger total.

He dispatched a good length delivery for a 98-metre no-look six, keeping his eyes focused on the ground and then on Chahar instead. This got the commentators going: “He’s not even looking at the ball.”

The very next ball, Deepak Chahar bowled around the same length, and Guptill went for a similar shot, looking to deposit it on the leg side boundary. This time however, it failed to achieve the desired elevation and was taken by Shreyas Iyer. This time it was the India bowler’s turn to lock his eyes on his opponent, with Guptill walking off for 70.
