Four selection questions for England ahead of the Lord’s Test

by Wisden Staff 5 minute read

The second Test between England and India gets underway at Lord’s on Thursday, and the hosts face a number of selection questions after a topsy-turvy display at Trent Bridge.

While England were bowled out for 183 in the first innings of the series, they managed to secure a draw after a fine Joe Root century in the second innings was followed by a washed-out fifth day as India were denied a crack at chasing down 209.

What changes might England consider for the second Test? We’ve taken a close look at the questions facing head coach Chris Silverwood and captain Root.

Is it time for Haseeb Hameed?

England’s top order continues to be a source of concern, with Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley facing heavy scrutiny for their recent displays. While Sibley was able to blunt the new ball in both of his knocks at Trent Bridge, his highest score was 28 and he averages 21.56 with the bat in Tests this year after 18 innings. Nonetheless, Crawley’s struggles are even more pronounced – while the Kent batsman showed some fluency in reaching 27 in the first innings at Trent Bridge, he has just 156 Test runs at 11.14 since his breakout 267 against Pakistan last year.

If England do opt to tinker with their top order, Haseeb Hameed will almost certainly be the man to come in. The 24-year-old has been in fine touch for Nottinghamshire this summer, averaging 45.85 in the County Championship, and he put out a serious statement last month by registering a first-class ton against India for the County Select XI. An appearance at Lord’s would mark a first Test at home for the opener who impressed greatly when England toured India back in 2016.

Who could Ollie Pope replace?

Ollie Pope was unavailable for the first Test as he recovered from a quad tear, but Silverwood said on Monday that the Surrey batsman is “making all the right noises” in his race to be fit for the second Test. A return for Pope could therefore see Dan Lawrence replaced at No.6. The Essex batsman was outperformed by the returning Jonny Bairstow at Trent Bridge and has struggled since his unbeaten 81 against New Zealand at Edgbaston in June, registering two ducks and a score of 25 in his last three Test knocks.

Is there space for a frontline spinner?

England have yet to play a specialist spinner this summer – the absence of Ben Stokes has hindered the balance of their bowling attack and Jack Leach has paid the price, with England fielding four quicks from 8-11 in each of their three Tests so far. One way for England to fit Leach into their XI with four quicks would be to provide Sam Curran with the responsibility of batting at No.7, but it may be that they look away from the left-arm tweaker if they do turn to spin in their XI – Silverwood told the media on Monday that Moeen Ali is in England’s thoughts and didn’t rule out the possibility of the off-spinning all-rounder being a late inclusion for Lord’s. Moeen could therefore slot in at No.7, paving the way for a combination of four quicks and a frontline spinner.

Will there be changes in the seam department?

With five Tests against India followed by five Ashes Tests in the winter, it would be a surprise if England don’t rotate their quicks at some point in this series to protect workloads. Whether they opt to do so after one Test is more of an unknown. It would be strange to see Ollie Robinson and James Anderson drop out after the pair shared nine wickets at Trent Bridge – does that mean Stuart Broad’s place is under threat? Nevertheless, no play on day five in the first Test could weaken the need for further rest, paving the way for the same pace attack to be employed at Lord’s. Mark Wood and Craig Overton are on the bench should there be a desire for a new quick.
