Watch: Rohit Sharma gets applauded for finally making contact with the ball against Dale Steyn

Rohit v Steyn
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: In an ODI against South Africa in December 2013, Rohit Sharma had a streak of just playing and missing as Dale Steyn produced a fast bowling masterclass with the white ball.

In the second ever pink ODI at the Wanderers Stadium, the crowd were treated to a special show from Steyn as he keep the ODI batting giant Rohit Sharma, fresh off an ODI double hundred against Australia the previous month, silent for four overs before the Indian could finally put bat to ball.

In an enthralling battle, cashing a mammoth 359, India got off to a stuttering start as Rohit played and missed at six deliveries from Steyn and left the others alone as he did not get off the mark, or put bat on ball, for 15 deliveries.

When he finally managed to defend one to point off Steyn off his 16th ball – all deliveries he faced were off Steyn until then – Rohit received a massive roar from the crowd at the Bullring. The batsman was seen making a shy smile as he geared up to face again.

Ravi Shastri narrated the incredible scenes from the ground sitting in the commentary box: “A massive roar from the crowd. He’s made contact! He’s seeing it better.”

Rohit was dismissed for 18 off 43 balls eventually, run out by David Miller, and India lost by 141 runs.
