India cricketer Mayank Agarwal was deplaned and hospitalised immediately in Agartala yesterday (January 30) after reportedly complaining of a burning sensation in his mouth following consuming liquid from a bottle onboard a flight. Here’s what we know so far.

What happened?

According to reports, Mayank was onboard an Indigo flight to Surat from Agartala for his state team Karnataka’s 2023/24 Ranji Trophy match against Railways that begins on Friday (February 2). He complained of stomach pain and a burning sensation in his throat and mouth after consuming a liquid, which he believed to be drinking water. Wisden understands he drank from a bottle in the seat pocket in front of him.

After a bout of vomiting, Mayank was immediately deplaned along with the team manager and rushed to a private hospital in Agartala, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

While he is said to be out of immediate danger, Times Now reports that he is having trouble speaking. He is also set to undergo a few tests and is likely to return to Bengaluru for further examination.

Mayank is also expected to miss Karnataka’s next Ranji game. He has played 26 international games for India, with his last appearance coming two years ago in the Test series against Sri Lanka at home.

Out of danger

Mayank gave a positive update on his health today (January 31). He posted pictures of himself lying on the hospital bed on social media and mentioned that he felt better.
