‘I never slapped Javed Miandad’ – Rashid Latif sends legal notice to Pakistan TV anchor for ‘frivolous’ comments

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif has sent a legal notice to cricketer-turned-anchor Parvez Mir for alleging that he had slapped legendary Javed Miandad during a live television show.

While anchoring a live show on Samaa TV, Mir claimed that Latif had slapped Miandad in a dressing room fall-out during Pakistan’s 1993 tour of the West Indies. Former internationals Shahid Afridi and Mushtaq Ahmed were among other panellists present at that time and were taken aback by the revelation.

“I witnessed rivalry within the team during the 1993 tour of West Indies. I flew from London to Antigua and talked to the then team manager Khaled Mahmud to not give any statement on the dressing room atmosphere. A couple of cricketers even sold their account for 10,000 pounds to the Sun. And inside Rashid Latif slapped Javed Miandad and I saw him sitting outside. I felt bad for him but advised him to forget it,” stated Mir on Samaa TV.

Latif took the legal route to seek justice for Mir’s defamatory statements. He issued a legal notice demanding an unconditional apology within 14 days, failing which will incur a fine of 1 Billion INR.

Latif took to X (formerly Twitter ) to debunk Mir’s claims: “I never slapped or even raised my voice in front of legendary Javed Miandad.”

According to Latif, Miandad is an “institution of cricket” whom he has always held in high regard: “Javed bhai is not only a legend of Cricket (an ICC Hall of Famer), he is a national hero and pride of Pakistan. I was honoured to debut for Pakistan under his captaincy. He is an institution of Cricket, and I have learnt a lot from him. I respect him like a father.”

“Through my attorney, I have served a legal notice to Mr PJ Mir to tender an unconditional apology and appropriate retraction within 14 days, pertaining to frivolous comments passed about me and Javed bhai,” Latif concluded.
