IPL chairman: IPL 2024 will be held in India despite general elections

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that the 2024 Indian Premier League will be held in India despite the tournament coinciding with the general elections next year.

The 17th edition of the IPL will go ahead as scheduled in the month of March-May and will be played alongside the Assembly Elections to choose the next Prime Minister of India. Dhumal confirmed the same to Jagran News, also stating that the schedule of the IPL will be announced after the dates of the elections.

With excess police officers required on the dates of the elections in various districts, cities will have trouble providing security for the IPL if the dates coincide with the voting process. The IPL faced a similar issue in 2019, when the IPL schedule was made in accordance with the election dates, giving centres games either when the voting in the state had been over or was yet to begin.

Dhumal said, “The IPL will be held in India next year. We will need time to make the schedule because it will be made after the Election Committee announces the dates of the general elections. We will have to see when the different states have their elections and will make the schedule accordingly. We will need to wait and will need to work with the government.”

The IPL has coincided with the Assemble Elections thrice before – in 2009, 2014 and 2019. In 2009, the entire tournament was held in South Africa, making it only one out of two times that the entire edition of the IPL has been held outside India.

In 2014, the first 20 games of the competition were played in the UAE, before being shifted to India in May.

Five years later, the IPL hosted the entire tournament in India for the first time despite it clashing with the elections in the country at the same time.
