Watch: Reece Topley cleans up Cam Green with pinpoint yorker on IPL debut, leaves field with injured shoulder soon after

Reece Topley dismissed fellow IPL debutant Cam Green in IPL 2023

Winning the battle between two IPL debutants, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Reece Topley dismissed Mumbai Indians’ Cam Green for a four-ball five, playing his part in RCB’s triple powerplay strike in their first home gamebut went off injured soon after.

Troubled by early swing and tight lines, Mumbai’s top order found it difficult to get going in the first six overs. Ishan Kishan fell to a top edge that flew to third man, bringing in Australia all-rounder Green – playing his first IPL game – at No.3.

Bowling to him was Topley, another tournament debutant. The first delivery was crunched through the covers by Green, but two balls later, he could do little when a scorching yorker from the left-armer swung and rattled his middle stump.

It gave Topley his first IPL wicket – interestingly, the 29-year-old nearly played for Chennai Super Kings in 2021, when he was reportedly picked to be a replacement for Josh Hazlewood. However, a new rule at Yorkshire, which changed the deadline by which County Championship cricketers can sign up as replacements, prevented Topley from joining the Chennai-based franchise.

Green – the second most expensive player in this year’s auction – was the second Mumbai wicket to fall, with the Rohit Sharma-led team managing 29-3 in the powerplay.

Unfortunately for Topley, a fielding attempt in the eighth over led to a right shoulder injury, forcing him to walk off the field in some pain. Fellow Englishman David Willey replaced him on the field, with no replacement player named as yet.

Topley has endured a horror run during his professional career, suffering for years with back stress fractures and missing the T20 World Cup after a freak ankle injury treading on a boundary rope cushion.
