Watch: Curran, Shahrukh combine to smash 28 runs in momentum-turning 19th over

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Yuzvendra Chahal conceded 28 runs in the penultimate over of the innings against Punjab Kings, as Sam Curran and Shahrukh Khan shared a 73-run stand in 31 balls during an IPL 2023 clash today.

Reeling at 50-4 in the seventh over against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab recovered well, with Curran combining with Jitesh Sharma to forge together a 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The wicketkeeper’s dismissal, in the 14th over by Navdeep Saini, brought Shahrukh to the crease, which stalled the scoring rate, as Punjab could make only 27 runs in the next 4.1 overs.

However, the 19th over bowled by Chahal saw the momentum turn, with the India spinner smashed for three sixes and two fours. The first ball, to Shahrukh, was pulled over mid-wicket for a four, while the next delivery was dispatched over deep mid-wicket for an 87-metre six. Chahal bowled a wide next-up and conceded a single on the third legal ball of the over, which brought Curran on strike.

The all-rounder went on to smash two successive sixes as 24 runs came off the first five balls. Chahal could have ended with some respite on the last delivery after Curran flicked the ball towards square leg and into the hands of substitute fielder Donovan Ferreira, who ended up making a mess of it. Worse, it rolled over the boundary rope as Curran raced away to a 31-ball 49.

Shahrukh ensured Punjab ended on a high, as he hit Trent Boult for 18 runs in the 20th, to take his side to a competitive total. 46 runs were scored in the last two overs, with Shahrukh ending on 41* in 23, and Curran remaining unbeaten on 49 in 31.
