Watch: ‘Wonderful sportsmanship’ – Colin Munro withdraws run out appeal against Martin Guptill following fierce blow at non-striker’s end

Colin Munro called back Martin Guptill after he was run out following a blow from the striker in the ILT20

Desert Vipers skipper Colin Munro withdrew the run out of Martin Guptill after the latter tumbled at the non-striker’s end following a hit from the striker in the second edition of the International League T20 (ILT20 2024) on Sunday (January 28).

Guptill, playing for the Sharjah Warriors, was at the non-striker’s end when he copped a painful blow to his arm after Joe Denly sent a drive down the ground. The ball hit Guptill with full force, who fell due to the blow. At this point, Guptill was out of his crease, which allowed the bowler Shadab Khan to quickly pick up the ball, knock the bails off and run out Guptill.

Guptill looked dismayed at the dismissal but he was given another opportunity to carry on as Munro withdrew the appeal after a conversation with Shadab. He was immediately praised by the commentators for his gesture.

“That is absolutely wonderful sportsmanship from Colin Munro. The captain has called him back, there’s no way that he was going to allow Martin Guptill to walk off the field when he’s been clattered.”

The non-striker could be seen writhing in pain following the incident, needing medical attention for his finger.

Guptill, batting on 29 at the time, made 39 in 32 balls, helping his team to a seven-run win against the Vipers.

Munro and Guptill played together in 90 international games together for New Zealand between 2012 and 2020.
