The Hundred Wildcards: Which players could still land deals?

by Wisden Staff 5 minute read

The squads for the men’s Hundred – which gets underway in July – are yet to be finalised. Each side still has to pick a Wildcard – a player who will occupy the lowest salary band – with the draft to take place on July 2.

We take a look at some impressive performers in this year’s T20 Blast who don’t currently hold Hundred contracts but are mounting cases for inclusion in the new tournament.

Stevie Eskinazi – Middlesex

The second-highest run-scorer in last year’s Blast, Eskinazi is averaging more than 50 in this year’s competition after a stunning few days. An unbeaten century at Lord’s against Essex last Thursday was followed by a knock of 64 the next evening against Surrey, and a match-winning 91 not out against Glamorgan took place just two days later. He’s timing his run strongly.

Sam Hain – Birmingham

Known for his astoundingly high List-A average, Hain has been an impressive presence at No.4 in Birmingham’s line-up this year and began this season with three half-centuries in his first four innings. Even after scores of 0 and 2 in his last couple of digs, he holds an average of 48 after eight knocks in this year’s Blast.

Jordan Thompson – Yorkshire

The seam-bowling all-rounder has been in phenomenal touch with the bat of late: against Worcestershire last week he blasted 66 off just 28 balls in an exhilarating sixth-wicket stand of 141 with Harry Brook; three days later Northants were victim to a 35-ball 74 that included seven sixes.

Dan Douthwaite – Glamorgan

The 24-year-old all-rounder smashed 53 off 31 balls against Middlesex last Sunday but it’s been with the ball that he’s impressed the most this season, taking 10 wickets in seven matches at an average of just 17.98.

Sam Cook – Essex

Cook has built his reputation as a metronomic seamer with the red ball but this year he’s impressed with the white, too, taking 11 wickets for the 2019 Blast champions at an average of 19.09.

Joe Cracknell – Middlesex

Cracknell made his senior debut for Middlesex last year and can give the ball some serious tap, as demonstrated by his first two knocks of this year’s Blast: a 43-ball 77 against Hampshire was followed by 41-ball 67 against Gloucestershire.

Dan Moriarty – Surrey

A left-arm spinner who was the leading tweaker in last year’s Blast, Moriarty has been solid if not spectacular in this year’s competition, taking six wickets at an average of 24.83 and economy rate of 7.09.

Jack Leaning – Kent

Leaning has delivered an impressive strike rate in Kent’s middle order this year: 146.29. There have been match-winning half-centuries against Middlesex and Gloucestershire, while Essex were treated to a 17-ball 42* and bowling figures of 3-15.

Dom Bess – Yorkshire

The Test off-spinner remains relatively inexperienced in white-ball cricket but has impressed so far in this year’s Blast, taking two three-wicket hauls and conceding just 21 runs from his four overs in the one match he’s gone wicketless in.

Jake Lintott – Birmingham

A left-arm wrist-spinner, Lintott is a rarity in the English game and could use that to his advantage in landing a Hundred gig. After 10 wickets at 18.90 last year, Lintott has taken eight this year at an even lower 17.37.
