Watch: Umpire falls over turning to watch in comical County Championship moment

Umpire falls over while officiating County Championship match

Watch: Umpire Anthony Harris had an unfortunate moment while officiating in a County Championship match between Yorkshire and Derbyshire at Scarborough on September 3, ending up on his back after stumbling and falling over.

Harris was standing at the non-striker’s end on day one of the Division Two fixture. Yorkshire openers Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean put on a fifty partnership. Bean was on 11 when he hit a straight drive back down the ground to the left of Harris off a full toss from Derbyshire seamer Anuj Dal.

As the ball rab down towards the boundary, Harris moved to his right to take position, turning as he did so to watch it. As he turned while walking quickly backwards, he unfortunately lost his footing. In cartoon-like fashion, Haris then took multiple steps backwards while off balance, attempting to save the fall.

His efforts were in vain, however, as he eventually completely lost balance and fell heavily on his back. To add to the comedy of the moment, momentum carried his legs up into the air after him, giving an image of Harris on his back with both legs pointing upwards.

Miraculously, Harris’ wide-brim sun hat stayed fixed to his head during the fall, even when he was on the ground. His radio, on the other hand, was dislodged from its holding on his body’s impact with the ground.

Laughs could be heard over the live stream audio at Harris’ mishap, but a Derbyshire fielder walked over to check on him from mid on.

No serious damage was done to Haris, who was able to continue officiating the match. On day two of the fixture, Derbyshire continued their first innings after Yorkshire were bowled out for 297.
