Watch: UAE captain Muhammad Waseem was run out in unusual fashion during his side’s World Cup 2023 Qualifier match against Ireland.

Ireland and the UAE, already out of reckoning for a spot in the Super Six, came into their last match in a desperate quest for their first win of the World Cup Qualifier.

Paul Stirling blasted a 134-ball 162 after Muhammad Waseem opted to bowl at the Bulawayo Athletic Club. Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector also made fifties as Ireland posted 349-4.

Opening the batting, Waseem responded with a flurry of boundaries, racing to 45 in 31 balls out of a 58-run first-wicket stand. Then Mark Adair bowled a short-pitched ball that hit Waseem on the arm. Writhing in pain, Waseem immediately summoned medical help.

In the process, Waseem did not notice two things. First, he was out of the crease. And secondly, the ball had rolled to Balbirnie at cover. The ball did not satisfy any of the eight conditions, as mentioned in Law 20.1.1, that requires it to be dead.

Balbirnie threw the stumps down, appealed for run out, and got the dismissal in his favour.

There have been numerous instances of a batter being run out while strolling outside the crease before the ball was dead. Against Australia in 2018/19, Azhar Ali set one of the most bizarre examples of the same. However, it is not as common when the batter is injured.

At the time of writing, the UAE were 155-6 in 30 overs.
