Watch: Virat Kohli laces square drive for four to bring up 29th Test century, bows to the crowd in celebration | WI vs IND

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Watch: Virat Kohli brought up just his second Test hundred since November 2019, and his first overseas in 55 months, with a trademark square drive during the second match against the West Indies at Trinidad.

Kohli’s previous Test hundred away from home was in December 2018, when he got to the landmark against Australia at Perth. After a long wait of 1,667 days, he lifted his bat again in celebration on Friday (July 21) when he registered his 29th hundred in the format, to equal Don Bradman’s tally in Test cricket.

Walking out to bat at 153-2 on day one of the Test, Kohli played with caution, hitting only 11 fours in his 206-ball stay at the crease. One such hit brought up his Test hundred, on the second ball of the 91st over, bowled by Shannon Gabriel.

Batting on 97, Kohli elegantly dispatched the fuller delivery outside the off-stump, past the fielder at backward point, to bring up his ton in style. There were no extravagant celebrations on reaching the milestone. Instead, he just let out a wide smile, embraced his partner Ravindra Jadeja, took off his helmet to bow down to his teammates, kissed his wedding ring and signalled a ‘thumbs up’ before gearing up to face the next ball again.

Kohli was eventually run out for 121. It was only the third time in 187 innings that he was been dismissed in that manner.
