Wisden’s T20 World Cup Duds XI

by Wisden Staff 5 minute read

The 2022 edition stands as arguably the greatest T20 World Cup ever, with many players raising their game to make it a success. However, a few were unable to perform as per expectations.

In our ‘Duds XI’, filled with players of whom plenty was promised but delivered little, we have not considered players from either of the finalists, but still got plenty of big names who were unable to set the stage on fire in Australia.

Rohit Sharma – captain

116 runs @ 19.33, SR: 106.42

Before the start of the T20 World Cup, Rohit needed 170 more runs to surpass Mahela Jayawardene’s run tally to become the leading run scorer in the competition’s history. He fell well short, and was below par overall, with question marks being raised over his T20I future. Rohit’s reflexes are not what they used to be, he looked hurried against pace, and his captaincy was all over the place too. The right-hander scored 27 in 28 in the semifinal yet blamed the bowlers for India’s defeat, which did not earn him points.

David Warner

44 runs @ 11, SR: 107.31

The left-hander, Player of the Tournament a year ago, only managed a high score of 25 and failed to give a glimpse of the dangerous batter that we know him to be. In familiar conditions, Warner managed 5, 11, 3 and 25, and did not set the foundations for his team as they crashed out early.

Temba Bavuma

70 runs @ 17.50, SR: 112.90

Bavuma moves down to No.3, with a tough tournament for openers providing plenty of options. “Could I say that I’m happy with my personal performances? No,” was his end of competition summary.

Tristan Stubbs

31 runs @ 10.33, SR: 100

Stubbs had been unstoppable in T20s, scoring 838 runs in 37 innings at a strike rate of nearing 156. It fetched him the highest bid of USD 520,000 in the auction for the SA20 where he went to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. However, he was unable to live up to his billing in the T20 World Cup, scoring just 31 runs before he was dropped against Netherlands.

Tim David

26 runs @ 26, SR: 144.44

Yet another franchise cricket superstar who was unable to leave a mark in the edition. David was the only change in Australia’s squad from their victorious campaign last year, with the selectors backing him to come good. He played three games but did not cross 15 in the event.

Dinesh Karthik – wicketkeeper

14 runs @ 4.66, SR: 63.63

Karthik’s was supposed to be a fairytale ending – in the circuit since 2004, a dream 2022 IPL allowed him to make a surprise comeback into the India team. He was assigned the role of finisher by the management, but an untimely dismissal against Pakistan on the penultimate ball of the close game heightened the pressure on him. An unfortunate run out against Bangladesh did not help matters and he was finally benched midway through the tournament.

Mohammad Nabi

1 wicket @ 46, ER: 7.66
17 runs @ 5.66, SR: 113.33

Nabi stepped down from the captaincy after his team’s ouster in the 2022 T20 World Cup, blaming frustrations with the management and the selection committee for the decision. The all-rounder did not have the best outing in the tournament either, managing a high score of 13 and only picking up one wicket. His dismissal against Australia put an end to Afghanistan’s hopes, as they lost by four runs.

Odean Smith

2 wickets @ 42.50, ER: 9.44
25 runs @ 25, SR: 113.63

Smith, a powerful hitter lower down the order, was criticised by Andy Roberts for his fitness standards after a tournament that went downhill for West Indies. Smith, in particular, was a letdown, conceding the most runs by a West Indies bowler who sent down more than three overs and not making an impact with the bat either.

Axar Patel

3 wickets @ 38.33, ER: 8.62
9 runs @ 4.50, SR: 100

Edging out other spinners due to his batting skills, Axar was a disappointment with the willow, making nine runs in three innings. The Australian conditions did not help his bowling either, as he was hit all over the park to end as the most expensive bowler for India in the campaign.

Pat Cummins

3 wickets @ 44, ER: 8.25

It was a tournament where the big guns flopped for Australia. Not the most effective T20 bowler, Cummins yet again displayed why it might be time for the management to look for other options in the format. The quick was expensive, giving away 46 and 36 runs in his first two games, but was more economical against Ireland and Afghanistan.

Kagiso Rabada

2 wickets @ 75.50, ER: 9.43

The fact that no other bowler from his team conceded more than nine runs an over indicates the tournament that Rabada had. He did not complete his quota of overs in all games and was especially expensive against the Netherlands, conceding 12.33 an over in a crucial game, to end as the most expensive bowler on the day.
