Watch: Dinesh Karthik was run out during India’s 2022 T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh, but replays suggest that the stumps could have been dismantled by the bowler’s hand, rather than the ball.
The last ball of the 17th over of the innings was a wide full-toss by Shoriful Islam, which striker Virat Kohli hit straight to the fielder at extra cover. Karthik, at the non-striker’s end, set off for a quick run and was almost halfway down the pitch before he was sent back by Kohli.
He was unable to get back in time, as Shoriful gathered the ball and went on to take off the bails. However, the ball slipped out of his hands and touched the stumps before falling to the ground. What made it trickier for the TV umpire was that Shoriful’s palms hit the stumps as well, but he was quick to signal that Karthik was out, saying the ball had hit the stumps before his hands.
Replays, however, suggest otherwise, with the lights only flashing after the bowler’s hands hit the stumps and after the ball had bounced away.
According to MCC’s law, a wicket is broken fairly only “by a fielder with his/her hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used”.
In this incident, the ball was not nestled in the Bangladesh player’s hand as it popped out before the zing bails were dislodged and lit up.
Karthik had to walk back for a seven-ball five, with India ending their innings on 184-6 in their 20 overs.
Wasn't convinced about DK's dismissal. To me it looked like that hands hit the stumps and broke the bails. When the ball touched the stumps, don't think the bails were dislodged.
