The 2024 edition of the IPL will begin on March 22, with Chennai Super Kings locking horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru. Here is the complete list of IPL 2024 captains.

Hardik Pandya taking over Mumbai Indians captaincy from Rohit Sharma has been the most-talked-about change in leadership for the upcoming season. Pandya, who won four IPL titles (2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020) with MI, was released before the 2022 auction. He led Gujarat Giants to a title win in 2022 and a runners-up finish in 2023 before being traded back to MI in a historic transfer this year. The leadership void in GT’s camp led to Shubman Gill being appointed their latest captain, aged 24.

The 17th edition of the IPL will also see star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant return to action as Delhi Capitals’ captain after missing the previous season due to the injuries he sustained in a car crash. Pant will replace interim skipper David Warner. Having missed last season due to back surgery, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer is another player who is returning from an injury hiatus.

In another noteworthy change at the helm, Sunrisers Hyderabad appointed Pat Cummins as their new leader, replacing Aiden Markram, who led them in 2023. Cummins was bought for a whopping INR 20.50 crore deal by the franchise, the second-most expensive buy ever in the tournament.

Lastly, MS Dhoni, the most decorated skipper in the tournament’s history, will take charge of defending champions Chennai Super Kings again, perhaps the last time, in the hunt for their sixth trophy. The 42-year-old has been part of the side since the league’s inception in 2008.
