Watch: Test debutant Richa Ghosh ran out the experienced Beth Mooney with some sharp presence of mind from silly point on day three of the only Test match between India and Australia today, December 23.

India started day three with a lead of 157 with three wickets in hand. They added 30 to their overnight score to finish on 406 with an overall lead of 187.

In response, Australia started well with the bat in the second innings. Beth Mooney, in particular, looked in great rhythm, having hit seven boundaries in the first 36 balls she faced to race off to 33.

Just as the opening partnership between Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield was about to reach 50, the left-handed Mooney suffered a brain fade. She defended an overpitched ball from Sneh Rana in the 12th over that bumped right in front of her and went into the hands of Richa Ghosh who was standing at silly point.

There was a slight appeal from the Indian fielders for an lbw as the ball was close to the pad when it made contact with the bat. Perhaps distracted by the appeal, Mooney wandered out of her crease aimlessly, not realising that Ghosh had collected the ball cleanly.

Debutant Ghosh hesitated for a moment, deliberating whether to throw the ball underarm or overarm, before proceeding with the latter to dislodge the bails, catching Mooney well short of her ground.

Rohan Gavaskar, who was on air during the dismissal, said that Mooney had no idea where the ball had gone: “Completely unaware of where the ball’s gone. Went for a walkabout… extremely casual.”

Mooney was also involved in a run out in the first innings when Litchfield sacrificed her wicket to save her senior partner. She also nearly ran Ellyse Perry out a few balls later, before eventually getting run out herself in the second innings.
