Watch: India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was trapped lbw by Ash Gardner off a ball that almost rolled along the ground during the India Women vs Australia Women Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today (December 22).

India started day two of the only Test against Australia in a strong position, trailing by 121 runs with nine wickets in hand. Sneh Rana stuck around for a while in the morning before becoming the first wicket to fall in the day at a team score of 140.

Smriti Mandhana followed soon after for a well-made 74, brining together debutant Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues to the crease. The two youngsters took the attack to Australia and added 113 runs for the fourth wicket in just 31.1 overs. Richa’s wicket at the score of 260 brought the Indian captain Harmanpreet to the crease.

Her stay was an extremely short one, however, as the second ball she faced off Ashleigh Gardner kept extremely low, sneaking under her bat, and rapping her on the pads. The Australians appealed immediately and the on-field umpire gave it out.

Harmanpreet looked shocked at what had just transpired and went for a review. Unfortunately for her, despite the ball turning a fair amount, ball tracking showed that it would have just clipped the outside of leg stump, meaning she had to make the long walk back to the pavilion.

This is her second straight unfortunate dismissal after having been run out in a strange manner in the first innings of the Test against England earlier in the month. Batting on 49 then, her bat got stuck just outside the crease as she was attempting to get inside. In the second innings, she remained unbeaten on 44.

Earlier in this game, India had skittled out Australia for 219 on day one. At the time of writing, they have crossed 300 and are going strong at 307-7.
