Watch: Joe Root, bowling for the first time in the India v England Hyderabad Test, struck with his fourth ball, putting an end to a burgeoning Yashasvi Jaiswal innings in the first over of the second day.

Jaiswal commanded the third session of the opening day, racing to 76 off 70 to put India in a commanding position, bringing England’s lead down to 127. England had tried their three frontline spinners – Tom Hartley, Jack Leach and Rehan Ahmed – but none could contain Jaiswal on his way to his first Test half century on home soil.

The second day began with Ben Stokes tossing the ball to Root, who hadn’t bowled until that point. Jaiswal appeared to continue with his merry ways, smashing a four off the second ball to move to 80. Before the fourth ball, Stokes made a fielding change, bringing mid-off straighter.

Jaiswal gave himself a chance, trying to take Root on, but only managed to lob the ball back to Root, who took a sharp overhead catch. Jaiswal departed for 80 off 74.

Ahead of the first Test, England picked a spin-heavy XI, going with just the one seamer in Mark Wood. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, they put on 246 in the first innings, led by skipper Stokes’ 70. In response, India raced for 80-0 in the 13th over, before Rohit Sharma was dismissed trying to attack Jack Leach.
