India registered a resounding victory over Sri Lanka in Mumbai, beating them by 302 runs, the second-largest victory margin in the history of the men’s ODI Cricket World Cup.
Batting first, they put up a massive total of 357-8 on the back of three 80-plus scores by Shubman Gill (92 off 92), Virat Kohli (88 off 94), and Shreyas Iyer (82 off 56). Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a late cameo of 35 off 24 balls as well, taking India beyond 350 despite having lost Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the innings.
In response, India replicated their bowling performance from the 2023 Asia Cup final where they bundled Sri Lanka out for a low score. Jasprit Bumrah started off proceedings by pinning Pathum Nissanka in front with the first ball of the run-chase. Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami then completely annihilated the rest of the Sri Lankan batting.
Siraj took 3-16 off his seven overs while Shami took 5-18 off his five overs as Sri Lanka were skittled out for 55, their lowest World Cup score ever.
On the field, India seemed to have a lot of fun and understandably so. At one point, when Kohli was standing at slip alongside Gill and Iyer, the crowd kept chanting for Kohli to have a bowl. Hilariously, Kohli responded by gesturing towards them to stop asking him to bowl. However, a few minutes later, he replicated his run-up and action giving in to the crowd’s demands.
With this victory, India have sealed their berth in the semi-finals, becoming the first team to do so in this World Cup.
