Batting first, India scored 357-8, their first 300-plus score in the 2023 World Cup, led by fifties from Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88) and Shreyas Iyer (82). Kohli narrowly missed out on his 49th ODI ton, which would have seen him equal Sachin Tendulkar’s tally in the format.
Rohit Sharma, who made 87 in the last game against England, was out for four, with the top four wickets falling to Dilshan Madushanka. The right-hand seamer also went on to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav, ending with 5-80, the most expensive five-for by a quick in ODIs. It was also India’s fifth-highest score in the World Cup, with the highest being 413-5 against Bermuda in 2007 and the highest team score in the tournament without a player making a hundred in the innings.
In reply, Sri Lanka, in a repeat of the 2023 Asia Cup final, were rocked early on the very first ball of the innings as Jasprit Bumrah took out Pathum Nissanka and soon fell to 3-4 with Mohammed Siraj shining. Sri Lanka kept losing wickets and were eventually bowled out for 55, their third-lowest ODI score. It was also their lowest World Cup score, beating the 86 all out in the 1975 edition against the West Indies.
Sri Lanka also recorded the third-lowest World Cup score ever and the lowest by a Full Member country. Canada (36 and 45 in 2003 and 1979) and Namibia (45 in 2003), top the list of the lowest team innings in the World Cup.

It was also the second time ever that a team has won a men’s ODI World Cup game by a margin of more than 280 runs. Australia registered a 309-run triumph against the Netherlands earlier in the edition, which is the largest win in terms of runs. India’s 302-run triumph was the second-largest.
While Bumrah and Siraj rattled the top order, Mohammed Shami dismantled the lower order with 5-18 in five overs. He also became the highest wicket-taker for India in World Cups, with a total of 45 scalps in only 14 innings, going past Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath, both of whom had 44 wickets apiece.
Shami’s World Cup average is currently 12.91, the most among players with at least 20 wickets. He also has the joint-most five-fors in the World Cup (3), alongside Mitchell Starc and has seven four-fors, also the most among all bowlers. Overall, he is the eighth-highest wicket-taker in the World Cup, with the list being led by Glenn McGrath.
With the win, India also became the first team in the 2023 World Cup to qualify for the semi-final, with seven wins in as many games.
