Sri Lanka sent India to bat first in Mumbai on November 2 (Thursday), a decision that did not go in their favour as they saw the hosts pile on a massive score in the first innings. Led by fifties from Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88) and Shreyas Iyer (82), India posted a mammoth score and gained the early advantage with the ball when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Pathum Nissanka on the first ball of the innings.

A potential ‘ball of the tournament’ contender, Bumrah sent down a ball that angled in on a good length before moving away. Nissanka looked to defend it on the front foot, but the ball rapped him on his back thigh as Sri Lanka lost their first wicket.

Mohammed Siraj, who had not yet performed as per expectations in the World Cup, then came to the party, picking up three wickets in the space of seven balls. He first had Dimuth Karunaratne lbw for a golden duck on his first delivery of the match and had Sadeera Samarawickrama caught at third slip four balls later. Siraj bowled a ball wide outside the off stump, which the batter tried to punch away but instead edged to Iyer at third slip.

On the first ball of his second over, Siraj bowled a peach, getting it to angle in and take out Kusal Mendis’ off stump. The batter was beaten on the back foot as the ball straightened before coming in, leaving the team tottering at 3-4 in 3.1 overs.

This is not the first time that Sri Lanka struggled against India in an ODI game. The last time the two teams met in the final of the Asia Cup in September, Sri Lanka had been reduced to 8-4 en route to a 50 all out, with Siraj getting 6-21. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 55, beaten by 302 runs.
