Watch: Shubman Gill, on return after dengue, cover drives first ball in World Cup cricket for four

by Wisden Staff 15 minute read

Watch: Shubman Gill missed India’s first two 2023 World Cup matches with dengue, and started in style coming back into the side against Pakistan.

India were already on top, sparking a dramatic middle-order collapse to take Pakistan from 155-2 to 191 all out. Rohit Sharma had then hit the first ball of the chase for four, before a single brought Gill on strike.

The India starlet has come to the fore in 2023, leading the world in runs and centuries in ODI cricket, even threatening Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI runs in a calendar year. However, a bout of dengue saw him miss India’s first two games against Australia and Afghanistan, and he spent time in hospital earlier this week.

He returned to fitness for the crunch clash against Pakistan, with Ishan Kishan moving aside in the XI. He faced up to Shaheen Shah Afridi, and nailed a perfect cover drive for four. He didn’t overhit the ball, not extending fully into his follow through, but his timing was so pure that the ball raced to the boundary.

Gill added two more off-drives, and a glance down to fine leg for four, before hitting Shaheen to point, falling for 16.
