Watch: Sam Curran pushes away camera two balls after 20-run over | CWC 2023

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Sam Curran pushed the camera in frustration after leaking 20 runs in his second over in the England-Afghanistan World Cup 2023 match on October 15.

England didn’t have the best of starts after electing to bowl first. The Afghanistan opening duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz went all guns blazing from the word go. They put on 100 runs on the boards in just 12 overs, giving their team a solid start to cash in.

Left-arm seamer Sam Curran faced the wrath of the opening blitz. After taking six runs in his first over, Gurbaz and Zadran stepped feet on the gas when he came to bowl next. Gurbaz showed no mercy to Curran as he smacked three consecutive deliveries for boundaries, including a six, to cap off a 20-run over.

Curran went to patrol the boundary line after that assault. When the camera panned on him from a close angle, a livid Curran immediately pushed the equipment with his right hand.

Adil Rashid drew first blood for England, ensuring the return of Zadran for 28 (48). Gurbaz made the lion’s share of runs (75 off 52) in the 114-run stand. At the time of writing, Afghanistan were 150-3 in 25.2 overs.
