by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

The Netherlands were awarded five penalty runs in their innings against Sri Lanka, after Kusal Mendis couldn’t prevent the ball from rolling back and hitting his helmet while keeping, during their 2023 World Cup match.

Sri Lanka had rattled through the Netherlands’ top order after they were put into field in Lucknow. The Netherlands lost their first wicket in the fourth over of the day before collapsing to 91-6. They lost five wickets for 43 runs having been 48-1, before a strong seventh-wicket partnership boosted their hopes of setting a defendable target.

Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek put on a 130-run stand to take the Netherlands to 221-6. They were aided in their partnership by receiving five penalty runs after a mishap behind the stumps from Sri Lanka’s newly appointed captain.

Chamika Karunaratne bowled the second ball of his seventh over outside off, which Engelbrecht swung at and missed. The ball bounced just in front of Mendis, who was standing back, and he wasn’t able to take it cleanly. It bounced off his pads and looped up behind him, landing squarely on his discarded helmet several yards behind him.

Under Law 28.3.2: “If the ball while in play strikes the protective helmet… The ball shall immediately become dead and… The umpire shall award 5 Penalty runs to the batting side.”

Umpire Marais Erasmus immediately signalled that five penalty runs should be awarded, and they were added to the Netherlands’ total. The partnership was broke three overs later when Engelbrecht was bowled by Dilshan Madushanka for 70.

Van Beek continued to play a pivotal innings and scored his maiden half-century in a fifty-over World Cup before he was dismissed by Kasun Rajitha for 59. The Netherlands were eventually bowled out for 262, two balls short of their full 50 overs.
