Watch: Glenn Phillips dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto with his first ball during New Zealand’s third 2023 World Cup match against Bangladesh at Chennai.

Kane Williamson, back in the New Zealand side after a long injury layoff, won the toss and opted to bowl at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Litton Das gave Trent Boult the charge off the first ball of the game, mistimed it, and returned to the pavilion for a golden duck.

Tanzid Hasan (16) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 40 in 47 balls before Lockie Ferguson took out both in quick succession. With two new, left-handed batters at the crease, Williamson summoned Phillips to bowl the 13th over.

Phillips started from round the wicket. The first ball was the everyday off-break that pitched on a length on middle stump and held its line. Shanto tried to push it against the turn, but the lack of pace off the surface resulted in him playing it sooner than he would have wanted to.

As a result, Shanto could not keep the stroke on the ground. Instead, it lobbed in the air and Devon Conway held a terrific catch diving forward. “What a golden arm!” exclaimed Ian Bishop on air, as Bangladesh were left reeling at 56-4.

Williamson took Phillips off after his second over. Against England, he had dismissed Moeen Ali and Joe Root, and his pre-World Cup victim list includes Babar Azam and Jos Buttler.

Until the World Cup, however, he had six wickets at 39.67 from 20 ODIs. Here, he has figures of 7-0-41-3, and he is into his third match.

At the time of writing, Bangladesh were 124-4 in 26.2 overs. At the crease were Shakib Al Hasan (21) and Mushfiqur Rahim (46).
