Watch: Decision Rahul System – KL vindicated after insisting on caught-behind review

KL Rahul
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: KL Rahul urged his captain Rohit Sharma to take a review for a caught behind after it was initially called a wide during India’s record win against Sri Lanka in the 2023 World Cup, and was vindicated despite little support from his teammates.

India started brilliantly with the ball against Sri Lanka, reducing them to 3-4 within 3.1 overs, and soon had them at 22-6, in what soon turned out to be a repeat of the Asia Cup final in September. Sri Lanka were sent deeper into trouble when Dushmantha Chameera was out for a duck on the third ball of the 12th over by Mohammed Shami, which was caught by Rahul.

However, India would not have had the wicket if not for the persistence of the wicketkeeper, who was certain the ball, sent down leg, had been gloved by the batter. Even as the umpire Chris Brown signalled a wide assuming there was no contact with either bat or glove, Rahul, who had dived to his left to catch the ball, went up in appeal.

He was the only India fielder appealing for a caught behind, with Shami also not convinced Chameera had nicked the ball as he put his hands on his head after the wide signal. Rahul, however, was firm in his decision of it being out, shouting “glove hai [it’s gloves]” and Rohit took a review.

Rahul was vindicated as UltraEdge spotted a faint spike as the ball passed the glove. Rahul celebrated uniquely, hiding behind Shreyas Iyer and peeking behind with a smile, as India neared a win.

Earlier, Rahul unsuccessfully tried to discourage Rohit from taking the DRS in the third over, when Jasprit Bumrah bowled an inswinger to Kusal Mendis, which rapped him on his pads. India’s appeals for an lbw were turned down but Bumrah’s persuasion saw India take the DRS despite Rahul suggesting the ball was going down the leg side. India lost a review as the ball was shown to be missing the stumps.
