AUS vs AFG, World Cup 2023 Match 39: Team news

Australia’s injury woes continue with question marks over Steve Smith’s availability for the crucial World Cup game against Afghanistan. The Australia vice-captain confirmed he has been suffering from vertigo and seemed to feel unwell after training on Monday in Mumbai. Glenn Maxwell suffered a concussion last week but seems to be fit and available for the game, while Mitchell Marsh has returned from Australia after flying back following the death of his grandfather.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, could bring back Naveen ul Haq with the conditions not expected to favour a fourth spinner in Noor Ahmed. The side have mixed up their bowling combination according to the conditions and are likely to follow a similar template.

Australia vs Afghanistan: Expected XIs

Australia: David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith/Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil (wk), Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen ul Haq

Match prediction: Who will win today’s match?

Despite having punched above their weight in the World Cup, Afghanistan will face stiff competition against Australia, who have won five games in a row. The pitch will be a high-scoring one and expect Australia to get a big one if they bat first.
