Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, World Cup 2023 Match 8: Team news

Only two teams have won seven World Cup matches against a side without losing a single one. Pakistan, at the receiving end of a 0-7 streak against India, lead 7-0 against Sri Lanka. History is on Pakistan’s side. They have also played both warm-up matches and their tournament opener at Hyderabad.

Yet, Pakistan have teething problems of their own. Hassan Ali, while an excellent bowler, has not stepped up to the levels befitting of an injury replacement for Naseem Shah; Fakhar Zaman’s form remains a concern; and their spinners continue to lack penetration.

Against the Netherlands, Pakistan slipped to 38-3, then 188-6, before recovering to 286. Then, while chasing, the Dutch were 120-2 at one point. Sri Lanka are unlikely to let Pakistan off the hook as often in the same match.

Sri Lanka will themselves be bolstered by the near-certain return of Maheesh Theekshana, their lead spinner in Wanindu Hasaranga’s absence – almost certainly for one of the fast bowlers.

Theekshana’s return will certainly bolster a Sri Lanka unit that was flailed by South Africa during their record-breaking 428-5; the Hyderabad surface, too, is slower than the shirtfront Delhi pitch.

PAK vs SL predicted XIs

Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf.

Sri Lanka: Dasun Shanaka (c), Kusal Mendis (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kasun Rajitha, Charith Asalanka, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana.

Match prediction – today’s Pakistan-Sri Lanka live match

A close match. If spin does play a role, Sri Lanka will perhaps have their nose ahead. If not, Pakistan probably hold an advantage.
