Kusal Mendis has been taken to the hospital after suffering from cramps following his century against Pakistan at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad today (October 10).

Mendis notched his third ODI century, scoring 122 off just 77 balls against Pakistan at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Coming into bat in the second over of the innings after the fall of Kusal Perera’s wicket, Mendis took on Shaheen Afridi and Co and didn’t hold back.

Every Pakistan bowler was met with disdain as Mendis displayed his full range of shots, including drives, cuts, pulls, hooks, slogs and everything in between. He reached his hundred off just 65 balls, making it the sixth-fastest century in men’s ODI World Cup history.

Mendis was finally dismissed in the 29th over, attempting a third consecutive six after hitting two off two against Hasan Ali. Sadeera Samarawickrama then took over the charge. He reached his maiden ODI century, scoring 108 off 89 balls.

Sri Lanka scored 344-9 from their 50 overs, setting up a massive target for Pakistan. However, as they came out to field, it was Samarawickrama who came out with the keeping gloves, with Mendis nowhere to be seen.

Sri Lanka Cricket later released a statement saying that Mendis had to be taken to the hospital after complaining of cramps following his epic century in the first innings. Dushan Hemantha was took Mendis’ place on the field as the substitute fielder.

Further reports on Mendis’ condition are awaited, but expectations are that it should be nothing serious. Mendis has been in the form of his life, having already scored two 75-plus scores from two games at the World Cup. Sri Lanka would hope that he is able to return back to the field soon and be ready for their next game, which is against Australia on October 16 in Lucknow.
