The TV umpire was involved in a controversial review in the Bangladesh-Afghanistan game at the World Cup in Dharamsala today (October 7).

In the 25th over of Bangladesh’ run-chase against Afghanistan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz was stuck on the pads by a Mujeeb Ur Rahman googly. The on-field umpire raised his finger after a lengthy appeal by Afghanistan, only for Miraz to send it upstairs for a review.

Replays showed that the impact was “umpire’s call” and the ball was spinning back in enough to hit the wickets. However, the bone of contention was whether the ball had hit the inside edge of Miraz’s bat before striking his pad. The TV umpire, Ahsan Raz, ruled it in Miraz’s favour.

However, in a moment of confusion, he asked the on-field umpire to stay with his “Not Out” decision. Contrary to what Raza believed, the on-field call was “Out”, leading to Joel Wilson, the on-field umpire sporting a confused look.

Soon enough, however, the TV umpire spotted his error and had another go at the review process, this time assuming the correct on-field call of “Out”. His conclusion was the same once again, that Miraz had hit the ball with his bat before it came in contact with his pads. This time he correctly asked Wilson to reverse his decision to “Not Out”. Understandably, a lot of time was wasted between the third and fourth balls of the 25th over.

Miraz was finally dismissed four overs later when he tried to go over the top against Naveen-ul-Haq. Rahmat Shah leapt to grab a one-handed stunner at mid-off to end Miraz’s innings for 57 off 73 balls.  By the time he was dismissed, Miraz had taken Bangladesh to a position of strength at 124-3, needing just another 33 runs for victory in their opening fixture of the World Cup.

Earlier, Afghanistan weren’t able to capitalize on a good start as they ended up slipping from 112-2 to 156 all out within 38 overs. Shakib Al Hasan and Miraz both picked three wickets.
