Australia had already retained the Ashes after the rain-hit draw at Old Trafford. Already 2-1 up in the series, they are eyeing their first series win in England since 2001.

England, on the other hand, have a series to save and 12 crucial World Test Championship points to earn.

The teams played in contrasting fashion at the Kia Oval after Australia won the toss and opted to bowl. Harry Brook (85) starred in England’s first-innings total of 283 as Mitchell Starc claimed 4-82, while Steven Smith made 71 and Chris Woakes claimed 3-61 in Australia’s 295. The two innings of unequal lengths (England batted for 54.4 overs, Australia 103.1) spanned two days of cricket.

Despite batting for only 80 overs, England raced to 389-9 at stumps on day three as Starc returned 4-94 and Todd Murphy 3-110. Zak Crawley (73 in 76 balls), Ben Duckett (42 in 55), Joe Root (91 in 106), and Jonny Bairstow (78 in 103) all topped the 40-mark while striking at 75 or more, while Ben Stokes made 42 in 67 balls.

Day four: According to the Met office, it will be a cloudy morning, followed by a 50 percent chance of rain around mid-day. By one o’clock, that goes up to 90 percent, and the rain threat barely subsides for the rest of the day. Expect more breaks than cricket. AccuWeather, meanwhile, sits on the fence, with chances of rain hovering at around 50 per cent throughout the day.

Day five: Monday starts off better, according to the Met Office, with little chance of rain up to half past one in the afternoon. This is followed by a potentially wet couple of hours (about 50 percent), but things clear up after that. AccuWeather says there is little chance of rain at any point on day five.
