Bengaluru have hosted seven World Cup matches so far – one in each of 1987 and 1996, and five in 2011. India won the first two matches – by 16 runs against New Zealand in 1987 and by 39 runs in a high-octane quarterfinal against Pakistan in 1996.
In 2011, the authorities could not prepare the Eden Gardens in time for the India-England clash, and it had to be moved to Bengaluru. The match ended in a tie. Three days later, Kevin O’Brien slammed the fastest World Cup hundred as Ireland chased down 328 to beat England.
India played at the Chinnaswamy again in the edition. This time they beat Ireland by five wickets. Defending champions Australia played there after that, beating Kenya by 60 runs and Canada by seven wickets.
India play their last league match at the venue in 2023, against the Netherlands on November 12. The other matches, on October 20 and 26 and November 4 and 9, feature Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
