Watch: The moment Netherlands secured a historic World Cup upset over South Africa

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Logan van Beek bounced out Keshav Maharaj to secure the result of the 2023 World Cup so far, Netherlands easing past South Africa by 38 runs to pull off a seismic upset.

Afghanistan’s win over England was hailed as a big shock, but this victory trumped that, and was effectively decided a long way out from the actual finish, with the Dutch side putting on a masterclass.

They had been on the ropes early on, reduced to 140-7, before a counter-punch from Roelof van der Merwe, Scott Edwards and Aryan Dutt plundered 104 off the last nine overs.

In the chase, Netherlands never really gave the Proteas a sniff, strangling them with spin early on and taking wickets any time it looked like a rebuild had started.

Lungi Ngidi ended up unbeaten on seven off 24 as the pre-match favourites settled for trying to bat out the overs. Even this proved impossible, as Netherlands had the winning moment their performance deserved, Van Beek bouncing Maharaj, who attempted to arch back and play the ball behind square but only managed to get an edge through to the keeper.

The result could have significant ramifications on the tournament as a whole, with Netherlands dreaming of a semi-final push, and South Africa’s next game, against England, becoming huge for both sides.
