Dinesh Karthik scored his first fifty of the season during the MI vs RCB game in Mumbai today (April 11). He remained unbeaten on 53 off 23, hitting five fours and four sixes in the process. His late surge took RCB to 196-8. Unfortunately for them, it didn’t turn out to be enough as MI chased the target down in 15.3 overs and with seven wickets remaining.
Karthik has announced that this will be his last season in the IPL before he retires. However, his good form has raised some noises around a potential T20 World Cup berth.
The 2024 T20 World Cup starts right after the end of IPL 2024. Karthik was India’s first-choice wicketkeeper in the previous T20 World Cup in 2022. Back then, he had forced his way into the Indian team after a stellar IPL 2022 where he amassed 330 runs at a strike rate of 183 as a finisher for RCB.
The next year, he had a poor season with the bat, but has once again started an IPL season which coincides with a T20 World Cup year, with a bang. From five innings in IPL 2024, Karthik averages 143 and has a strike rate of 190.7.
During his knock of 53 (23) against MI, India captain Rohit Sharma was heard teasing Karthik for another potential T20 World Cup call-up. Rohit was heard telling Karthik on the stump mic that he has the T20 World Cup selection on his mind.
“World Cup me selection ke liye push karna hai isko (He is trying to push for a T20 World Cup spot),” Rohit said. “Dimag me chal raha hai, dimag me chal raha hai iske World Cup (He has the World Cup on his mind, he has the World Cup on his mind).”
