Watch: During the first Test of the two-match series, Rahkeem Cornwall dismissed Virat Kohli with an off-break that turned the proverbial mile.
Opting to bat, the West Indies were bowled out for 150 in just over two sessions against R Ashwin (5-60) and Ravindra Jadeja (3-26) in the first Test match, at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica.
The Indian openers, debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (171) and captain Rohit Sharma (103), then added 229 before two quick wickets fell, and Virat Kohli joined Jaiswal.
After sending down 11 overs on day one, Rahkeem Cornwall did not take field on the second day due to a chest infection. Since he had spent time off the field, he was not allowed to bowl on the third morning.
By the time he did get a chance to bowl at Kohli, the latter had moved to 74. It had not been a fluent innings. Kohli had been scratchy, and in the previous over, from Kemar Roach, he had almost played one on to the stumps, and had been dropped by wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva.
Before that, Kohli had been dropped by Kraigg Brathwaite, while Tagenarine Chanderpaul had missed running him out.
Now, with his eyes on the hundred, Kohli pushed the first ball he faced from Cornwall towards the leg side, and flicked the next ball to move to 75. Back on strike for Cornwall’s next over, he defended the first ball.
The next ball turned substantially across Kohli, who read the turn but, for some reason, attempted to play it past debutant Alick Athanaze at leg slip. He middled the ball, but it went straight to Athanaze, and Kohli walked back for a 182-ball 76.
India eventually declared on 421-5, with a lead of 271. Cornwall finished with 16-5-32-1 including a second spell of 5-2-10-1. Ashwin (7-71) then bowled out the West Indies for 130.
Virat Kohli faced 182 balls in this innings and only 4 of them were bowled by Rahkeem Cornwall. He had an immediate impact with his sharp turn and bounce.
