Watch: Mohammed Siraj gave India the perfect start to the WTC Final as he drew Usman Khawaja forward and got him to nick off to the wicketkeeper for a duck at The Kia Oval today (June 7).
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first on a cloudy morning in London, putting Australia in to bat on a surface that has a considerable amount of grass covering.
It was a brave decision, given India’s tendency to bat first after winning the toss in Test matches. So much so, that this WTC Final is the first Test match since November 2015 where India have chosen to field first after winning the toss.
And it didn’t take long for Siraj to justify his captain’s decision. The first couple of overs didn’t fetch any runs for Australia as they had to wait for 16 balls to get off the mark. Six balls later, India got their first breakthrough courtesy of a beauty from Siraj.

A length ball angled across the left-handed Khawaja from over the wicket drew him into a nothing shot as he hung his bat out, only to find a thin nick through to the wicketkeeper KS Bharat, who did no mistake. “India have drawn first blood”, quipped Ravi Shastri on air.
