After choosing to bat first, Australia went all guns blazing from the start. They racked up 78 runs in the blink of an eye, before David Warner, playing his 150th ODI, got out for 56 (34) during the eighth over. Each of the top four batters of the visitors scored a fifty: Mitchell Marsh was the highest scorer of the innings for a well-made 96 off 84 balls, comprising 13 fours and three sixes.
The stage was set for Glenn Maxwell as he came to bat when the tourists were well-placed at 267-4 after 37 overs.
Coming to bowl the 38th over, Bumrah worked Maxwell and Marnus Labuscgange up with a barrage of slower balls. The third ball of the over, bowled at 135 kmph, was a dot ball. The pacer angled into Maxwell’s hip in the very next ball as the batter took a single. The penultimate delivery was a 123 kmph slower ball of which batter Labuschagne stole a run.
The pacer handed the sucker punch in the final delivery. He hurled a pinpoint yorker at 141 kmph, targetting the base of the off-stump. Maxwell, who tried to open the face of the bat was undone by the pace and got bowled for 5 (7).
Australia posted a target of 352 at the loss of seven wickets, the highest ODI total ever in Rajkot.
