Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first but had no idea what was coming. India were back to their first-choice team after resting a few players in the game against Bangladesh. That meant the new-ball pair of Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were back and they wreaked unprecedented havoc on the Sri Lankan batting order.
Bumrah set the tone for the innings first-up. An outswinger to the right-handed Pathum Nissanka off the first ball of the match saw him edge it to third man for a single. That brought the left-handed Kusal Perera on strike. Bumrah bowled another outswinger, this time to the left-hander.
The first one beat Perera’s bat, but the second one was close enough to his off-stump that it caught his outside edge and flew towards the wicketkeeper who leapt to his left to catch the ball in front of first slip, handing India their first breakthrough.
Siraj then broke several records over the course of his next couple of overs, taking four wickets in the fourth over of the innings and registering a five-for in joint-quickest time in ODI history – in just 16 balls.
At the end of the nine-over mark, Sri Lanka’s score read 30-6.
