Watch: ‘That reminds me of Herschelle Gibbs’ – Afghanistan fielder has three attempts at horror drop in T20 World Cup

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Afghanistan fielder Rahmanullah Gurbaz had to endure the ignominy of dropping the easiest of catches, despite having three grabs at the ball.

Afghanistan were in cruise control against Namibia, leaving the African nation at 29-3 at the end of the powerplay overs in their chase of 161.

The Afghan side had another opportunity at getting a breakthrough, when in the next over, Karim Janat got Gerhard Erasmus to chip the ball towards the cover region. However, the youngster Gurbaz made a royal mess of things.

The ball was grasped well by Gurbaz in the very first attempt. However, somehow it popped out of his hands. He had two more goes at it before finally dropping the catch.

Natalie Germanos aid, “Oh, It’s been dropped. It had gone straight towards cover.”

Daren Sammy, didn’t take much time to find the parallels between this dropped catch and another famous drop by Herschelle Gibbs in the ’99 World Cup. The South African fielder had scored a brilliant hundred in the Super Six encounter against Australia, before dropping Steve Waugh in the 31st over of a tense Australian chase. The Australian captain was on at 56 at that stage, and would go on to score a match-winning 120*.

There was no such luck for Erasmus, as the Namibian captain perished for a 14-ball 12.
