Watch: The Tasmania-Queensland Sheffield Shield encounter saw a bizarre moment when Jordan Silk survived a close-call off the bowling of Matt Kuhnemann.

The incident took place in the 32nd over of the Tasmanian innings. Silk was batting on 26, with his side 386 away from Queensland’s first innings total. The fourth ball of the left-arm spinner’s over landed right in front of Silk, who brought out the forward defence to counter it.

After the stroke, the ball bounced towards silly point, where Matt Renshaw bizarrely chose to parry the ball towards the wicketkeeper rather than go for the catch. Jimmy Peirson completed the catch, with all the close-in fielders going up in unanimous appeal.

The two umpires gathered for discussion, even as the commentators looked at the replays.

One of them said, “It’s gone to Renshaw who’s tapped it up, caught by Pierson. Hard [for the umpires] to call this without a replay… I think I’ll have to say just not out. You couldn’t call it.”

The umpires by then had already taken the decision, which was that Silk was not out.

But, when the commentators took a closer look in a subsequent replay, they felt that the ball had only hit the boot on the way to Renshaw.

“We’ll get a good look at it here. Great angle here, great camera work. Does it hit the ground as well? Ah, no, that’s out!”

At the end of the day’s play, Silk was unbeaten on 45, and Tasmania stood at 150-4.
