The 18-year drought: Can India break their jinx against New Zealand in the World Test Championship final?

by Wisden Staff 5 minute read

Call it a ‘jinx’, but it seems that India are just unable to thwart the New Zealand challenge when it comes to ICC events since the start of the century.

Since the start of 2000, Team India have faced New Zealand on seven occasions in ICC events, including twice in the World Test Championship. They have lost a total of six games, with their last win coming way back in 2003 when the Men in Blue defeated the Black Caps during the 2003 World Cup at Centurion by 7 wickets.

Overall, India have managed to win just three of 13 games that they have played against New Zealand in ICC events.

New Zealand beat India by 4 wickets, Champions Trophy final, 2000

Sourav Ganguly’s India had won all their games in the run-up to the summit clash in the Champions Trophy in Nairobi in 2000 but came up against a resilient Kiwi side in the finals. After being sent in to bat first, India got off to a flier, with the duo of Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar scoring 141 off 26.2 overs for the first wicket. However, the middle order collapsed as India managed 264-4 in their 50 overs.

India, however, did have the Kiwis on the mat at 132-5 before a fighting unbeaten century from Chris Cairns saw the team through.

India’s sole win against the New Zealand side in ICC events this century came during the Super Six stage in the 2003 World Cup when India registered a convincing win to knock the rivals out of the competition. Zaheer Khan was the star of the game as he picked up four wickets to bundle out New Zealand for just 146 in 45.1 overs.

India easily chased down the target with brilliant fifties from Mohammad Kaif and Rahul Dravid. It was India’s seventh win in a row in the competition.

The only blip in what was a memorable T20 World Cup for the Men in Blue in 2007 was the loss against the Kiwis in the Super Eight. The MS Dhoni-led side conceded as many as 78 runs in the final five overs courtesy of some fine hitting by Jacob Oram and Craig McMillan as they posted 190 on the board. Despite the openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir getting India off to a fabulous start, Daniel Vettori spun his web around the Men in Blue to end with 4-20 to turn the tide his team’s way.

India started off the Super Eight on a disappointing note but bounced back to win all their remaining games, including the final.

The Indians, playing the T20 World Cup at home, were the favourites to lift the crown before the Kiwis sprung a surprise and beat them at their own game. After restricting New Zealand to just 126-7 on a turning Nagpur track, India fell apart in the face of the Black Caps’ tweaker – Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi picked up seven wickets between them to dismiss India for just 79.

Kane Williamson, who had left out bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee for the encounter, walked away with two points, as India rued their missed chances. It was India’s fifth successive defeat to New Zealand in T20 Internationals.

In a semi-final that lasted two days, the Kiwis showed their might and skill as they first battled 239-8 on a tricky surface and then bowled brilliantly with the new ball to all but end India’s campaign. Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson once again proved to be the warriors as they scored 74 and 67, respectively, which proved to be the difference in the end.

Despite fighting fifties from Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni, the Indians were unable to get over the line as their World Cup dreams ended abruptly.

The first Test of India’s two-match sojourn of New Zealand saw age-old problems of swing disrupting the visitors’ batting yet again. New Zealand then scored 348 in their first innings, with the India managing only 191 in the second leg.

The game marked the arrival of Kyle Jamieson in Test cricket, who troubled the tourists with both bat and ball through the match.
