Watch: Varun Chakravarthy outwits Liam Livingstone with cunning leg-break, continues stellar return to form
Watch: Varun Chakravarthy completely outfoxed Liam Livingstone in Kolkata Knight Riders’ clash with Punjab Kings today (May 8) as he continued his stellar run in this year’s IPL.
Chakravarthy was the star for KKR in 2021, taking 18 wickets with an economy rate of 6.58 as the team scripted a remarkable comeback to reach the final of the edition. Ahead of the 2022 season, he was one of the four retained players by the franchise, but he failed to impress, picking only six wickets in 11 games at an average of 55.33.
The Tamil Nadu spinner has managed to turn around his form this season, grabbing 14 wickets in his first ten games, including defending nine runs in the last over in KKR’s win over Sunrisers Hyderabad. Against Punjab Kings, Chakravarthy, who entered the attack in the sixth over of the innings, had early success when he got the big wicket of Liam Livingstone in just his third ball of the match.
Livingstone, who made an unbeaten 82 in 42 deliveries in his side’s last game, was unable to replicate his form, as he was out lbw for 15 at Eden Gardens. The third ball of the last powerplay saw Livingstone play a leg-break delivery by Chakravarthy on the back foot, but the ball completely missed his defence and went on to hit his back pad instead, as the on-field umpire ruled him out lbw.
Though Livingstone went up for the DRS, he had to walk back after ball tracking suggested ‘Umpire’s Call’ after a lengthy delay caused due to technical issues. Chakravarthy eventually finished with figures of 3-26.
