by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Liam Livingstone smacked his England teammate Jofra Archer for three sixes in the 19th over of the clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023 today (May 3), with Archer eventually ending with figures of 0-56.

Livingstone walked out to bat at 62-2 in the eighth over, and started off cautiously, scoring 11 runs in his first 10 deliveries. He quickly moved to 31 off 23 and needed nine more balls to reach his fifty, as the duo of Jitesh Sharma and Livingstone piled on 119 runs for the fourth wicket.

Punjab Kings were 178-3 after the 18th over and were well-placed to reach at least 200, but Livingstone’s assault on Archer in the penultimate over helped them post 214-3 in the end. Archer, who had conceded 29 runs in his first three overs, bowled a slower ball first up, which was smashed over for a 91-metre six over long-on by Livingstone. The very next ball saw the batter swing a fuller delivery over long-on once again for a 92-metre six to make it two in two.

Another bigger hit followed on the next ball, which was aimed at his hips. Livingstone waited for the ball, took a swing and sent it 99-metres over the long-on stands for the third successive six in as many deliveries.

Archer’s night did not end there as he ended up conceding nine more runs in the over, including a wide that went to the boundary, to end with his most expensive IPL figures ever.

Livingstone remained unbeaten on 82 off 42 balls, while Jitesh Sharma made 49* in 27, as Punjab notched up a huge score.
